Don't underestimate your eye health! No more burning and stinging complaints: "Dry eye disease reduces the quality of life"

Stating that dry eye disease is a common but underestimated disease in society, Ophthalmologist Dr. Lecturer Uğur Tunç said, “This condition, which occurs due to a decrease in tear production or an increase in evaporation, causes burning, stinging and a decrease in vision quality, and personalized diagnosis is essential for treatment.”
Dr. Tunç, who drew attention to the fact that there are two basic types of dryness in the eye, said, “The first is dryness due to evaporation, and the other is dryness due to low tear secretion. While evaporation develops due to environmental factors, low secretion mostly develops due to rheumatological or autoimmune diseases. Making this distinction is very important in treatment.” Stating that the treatment should definitely be planned specifically for the patient, Dr. Tunç said, “The selection of tear drops requires great sensitivity. Preservative-free drops should be preferred for long-term use. We recommend oily drops for patients with oil loss at the base of the eyelashes, and drops with high hyaluronic acid content if evaporation is dominant.”
Dr. Tunç also warned that the unconscious use of cortisone (steroid) drops could lead to serious problems, saying, “Steroids provide serious relief to the patient when first used, but long-term uncontrolled use can cause serious side effects such as cataracts or glaucoma. They should definitely be used under the supervision of a physician.”
Finally, Dr. Tunç, who drew attention to the effect of environmental factors on dryness due to evaporation, said: “Factors such as looking at the phone or computer screen for a long time, air-conditioned environments, and wind evaporate tears rapidly. In this type of dryness, symptoms can be significantly reduced with lifestyle changes. In advanced cases where tear production is seriously reduced, autologous serum or PRP drop treatment can be effective. Blood taken from the patient is put through special processes and turned into drop form. PRP drops support the healing of the eye surface. We can achieve satisfactory results especially in severe and resistant dry eye patients.”
